Training available from MHF members

Apprenticeships

A combination of on and off-the-job training, leading to NVQ level 2 or 3, key skills and in some cases, technical certificates. MHF members provide apprenticeships in barbering, beauty therapy, hairdressing and nail services for young people aged 16 to 24, and an apprenticeship service for salons. A limited number of adult apprenticeships places are available for those aged 25 and over.

 

Young apprenticeships

For 14 to 16 pupils at key stage 4. Alongside core curriculum studies, learners spend up to two days a week in the workplace, and work towards vocational qualifications in barbering, beauty therapy, hairdressing or nail services. Provides a platform onto full apprenticeships at 16.

 

Functional skills

National qualifications in basic English, maths and ICT which are integrated into apprenticeships, and foundation learning but also available as stand-alone programmes.


Foundation learning

National programme incorporating modules in vocational or subject learning, functional skills, personal and social development. Works as a pathway to apprenticeships and other level 2 qualifications. MHF members provide foundation learning to young people between the ages of 14 and 19, adapting the programme according to whether they are at school, college or in employment.


NVQs

Industry-specific, competence-based nationally recognised vocational qualifications. NVQs in barbering, beauty therapy, hairdressing and nail services form part of Apprenticeships programmes available through the MHF. Some members offer these NVQs as stand-alone qualifications.
